How to Update Linksys Wifi Extender Firmware

Similar to routers, Linksys range extenders to have an update to their firmware that could solve some issues when working with the devices. The new Linksys Firmware Update will solve issues you might experience when using the gadget. It might be able to refresh the device to stop and fix intermittent or dropped connections.

  • You can connect range extender directly to your computer via an Ethernet cable. The range extender should not be linked to the router during the upgrade.
  • Use the web-based utility by opening a Web browser and entering 192.168.1.1 in the address bar. It is the default IP for the extender.

Note: You may enter http://extender.linksys.com in the address bar for an already configured range extender. Login to the web-based setup page by entering the credentials.

  • Input the username and password and click login.

  • On the configuration page, click Upgrade Firmware under the Administration.
  • Click Choose File.
  • Choose your firmware (.bin) file that you downloaded previously and click to open it.
  • Click Start Upgrade.

Progress of the upgrade process will be visible at the top of the page. To prevent problems caused by the range extender, ensure that you do not disrupt the process of upgrading.

Click on continue when prompted once the upgrade is completed.

Note: Make sure you’ve first obtained the file for the firmware on the Linksys support page.

Click on the save option.

  • The progression will be visible in the same place. To avoid any issues, ensure that you do not stop the process of upgrading.

Setting the extender’s range back to factory defaults

Resetting the range extender’s settings will reset it to its original settings. This is the procedure to take when you’ve upgraded the firmware on your device or have to change the settings of the extender’s range.

Note: If you would like to use the same settings to your range extender following resetting it, you can create backups before moving forward.

Two methods for you to restore the range extender’s settings to the default settings of the factory:

  • Resetting the device manually.
  • Resetting via web-based setup page

Manual reset

Hit the reset button on the right-hand side of the device next to the auto-configuration button for 8 seconds.

Through the web-based setup page

  • Open any web browser that is compatible to open the web-based setup page of the extender of your choice.
  • Click the password in the settings option.
  • Select Yes in the Restore factory defaults section.
  • After that, click Save Settings.
  • Unplug the range extender’s power cable and turn it off for 30 seconds to complete the procedure. After that, plug into the cord.

Once you’ve reset the range extender, you can change it back to your desired settings later.
